PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The days of driving to Boston or Manchester for a cheaper flight may be over, as Portland International Jetport officials point to a recent ranking that found PWM to be the most affordable in the region, and the 13th most affordable in the country.
The website Cheapflights.com released its annual Airport Affordability Index, and put Portland above Manchester, N.H. (#16) and Boston Logan (#76).
The report found the average price at PWM in June was $308, down from $394 in 2011.
According to Jetport Director Paul Bradbury, prices have gone down because of increased competition.
"We now have the critical mass of airlines here in Portland to really have a nice price-point," said Bradbury. "There's competition."
Bradbury points to statistics from the Maine Department of Transportation that show prices at the Jetport have been on the decline over the last two decades.
Adjusting for inflation, the DOT reports that a ticket that cost a passenger about $600 in 1995, would cost $300 today.
Bradbury said he hopes the recent rankings will help dispel the myth that you have to go out of state to get a good deal.
"You don't need to do that, and that's the perception," said Bradbury. "We're trying to go against that rule."
