BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Bangor High School does not offer lacrosse as a varsity sport, but group of athletes is hoping to change that. After two years of practicing and organizing, the Bangor lacrosse club played it's first game this afternoon against Winslow at the Union Street fields in Bangor.

Bangor athletic director Steve Vanidestine says if the club can demonstrate three years of consistent interest and participation from students, then the program will be evaluated and could potentially be added the Ram's athletic program. By that time, many of the students who worked hard to bring this program to life will have graduated, but they say the hard work is worth it, even if they won't ever get a varsity letter in lacrosse.

Players say Bangor High school has been very supportive of the lacrosse club in whatever ways it can be.

Lacrosse club adviser Dave Barnett says there has also been a lot of interest from girls at Bangor high in creating a lacrosse program.
